3rd-year student, Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design

Deciding to study fashion was easy, says Jiang Caihong (Daisy Jiang) who is currently completing a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design at AUT.

“I’ve always been passionate about fashion and creative arts in general. I chose to study at AUT because it’s well-known for having the foremost art and design school in Auckland, and the lecturers were extremely approachable, knowledgeable and helpful.

“Once I finish my studies, I would love to work as a fashion designer with an established fashion design company to grow my artistic and practical skills. Eventually, I’m planning to branch out, and establish my own fashion studio and brand.”

Creating unique and original fashion
Being able to work on different design projects throughout her degree has helped her develop a wide range of new skills, Daisy says.

“I’ve enjoyed gaining the skills to take my ideas through all stages of technical development, including the use of industry-standard equipment and technology and design. This has allowed me to make high-quality, unique and original fashion garments that reflect my passion for fashion.

“One of my greatest achievements has been designing for the Touch Compass Dance Studio, and making final garments and accessories for them that exceeded their expectations.”

Returning to study as a mature student had its challenges, she admits.

“My biggest challenges have been to blend into student and academic life again, as well as balancing family and study time. AUT has helped me through this by offering a well-organised introduction to each study stage and continuous advice from department staff.”

Advice for other students
Now in the final year of her degree, Daisy has some great advice for other students.

“I certainly recommend the Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design to others because the lecturing team will lead you to become a real fashion designer, with all of the skills to successfully work in the fashion industry.”

Make the most of the experienced academic staff, she adds.

“If you have a wide range of ideas, the lecturers will always help you to focus on practical and workable outcomes. I highly recommend AUT’s fashion degree as the academic staff are extremely helpful, approachable, practical and professional.”
