Student exchange student from Ryerson University, Canada
New Zealand is pure magic, says Jasmine Burji who came to AUT as a student exchange student from Ryerson University in Canada.
“It’s hard to pinpoint my favourite experience in New Zealand – the beaches are pristine and the hiking is out of this world! It’s a real treat for those who love the outdoors.”
Her advice for other students is to make the most of studying in New Zealand.
“Make sure you save, so you can travel as much as you can while you’re in New Zealand. There’s so much to see in this beautiful country. You will never run out of places to visit.”
An easy decision
Deciding to study at AUT was easy, Jasmine says.
“When I graduate I want to work in sustainable tourism development and destination management, and New Zealand has exemplary tourism strategies that are referenced a lot in Canada. I also love to be outdoors, so coming to New Zealand was a no brainer. I knew that AUT is in the heart of Auckland and not too far from many of the beautiful local beaches.”
She appreciated the wide range of papers she could choose from.
“AUT offers an abundance of interesting papers. I studied the papers Gastronomy 1, An Event Perspective, Te Ara Pou Leadership and International Noho Marae – Indigenous Encounters of a Māori Kind.
“I especially enjoyed learning about Māori culture – I felt that I was learning about Aotearoa (New Zealand) on a much deeper level than I would have on my own.”
An opportunity to challenge yourself
Jasmine says she would highly recommend studying at AUT to others.
“I learned so much about myself in New Zealand. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to challenge yourself mentally and physically to grow and become more confident in your abilities. I also met so many incredible new friends from all around the world.”
Living in AUT’s student accommodation made it easy to meet other people, Jasmine says.
“I lived in the Wellesley Student Apartments while studying at AUT, and I loved being part of a student community and always being surrounded by friends. Having easy access to everything downtown is also a big plus.”
