Jarryd Martin

3rd-year student, Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Analytics

Programming has always fascinated him, says Jarryd Martin who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences in Analytics.

“Growing up, I always enjoyed programming so choosing what to study at university was quite simple. AUT stood out to me because it’s a university that offers a balance of theoretical and real-life experience.”

While there was no question that Jarryd loved computing, his time at AUT helped him discover a particular passion for data science.

“During my studies at AUT I became fond of mathematics, especially the field of statics, and ended up choosing to major in analytics. Once I graduate, I’d love to have a career as a data analyst. I can see myself getting excited about wrangling new data, and providing meaningful information to a company to make impactful changes.”

Sharing ideas and developing skills
For Jarryd, the three years of his studies have been eye-opening.

“It felt like every time I went to a lecture there were lightbulb moments for me. I remember myself  struggling with the prepared reading and then have the lecture effortlessly explain the theory in a way that made it click. That was always a great feeling. I was particularly impressed by two of my lecturers, Dr Robin Hankin and Dr Sarah Marshall.”

He has had a number of highpoints throughout his time at AUT, Jarryd says.

“I always enjoyed the labs the most. They gave us the opportunity to collaborate, share ideas and opinions about the week’s work, and they were also where I met most of my university friends. Another highlight for me was the final-year research and development project. That was a good test to apply what I had learnt over the course of my studies at AUT.”

Advice for other students
Expecting to graduate in March 2021, Jarryd has some great advice for other students.

“My advice for other students is to use the AUT library. All the recommended readings and textbooks are there to be used.”

He would highly recommend AUT’s analytics and data science degree to other students.

“If you’re leaning towards studying data science and analytics, I would encourage you to go to AUT as, in my opinion, the analytics department is very strong and the academic staff are charismatic. I believe that the lectures want you to learn, and care about your growth and development.”
