Art Director, FCB West, San Francisco
Bachelor of Communication Studies in Advertising Creativity
He has always been creative, says Jake Flashman who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Communication Studies in Advertising Creativity.
“Being able to major in advertising creativity at AUT felt like the best outlet for my creativity. What I enjoyed the most about my degree was working on real briefs for real clients, and getting to work with a group of really good tutors.”
His studies also helped Jake discover where he intends to take his future career.
“The first assignment for my art direction paper and the discussions with my art direction lecturer really helped me work out what I want to do and where I want to be in the future.”
A new adventure
Through the Internz programme Jake is now based in San Francisco where he’s experiencing life as an art director at leading ad agency FCB West.
“I work on TV, radio, print and digital ads for a range of high-profile brands, including some we have in New Zealand as well as some brands that are only based out of America. I work on ideation, art direction, copywriting and some design work.”
He loves the variety of the work he is involved in, Jake says.
“It’s great having the chance to think about something different every day and coming to work knowing that I love what I do. The opportunity to make a name for myself at an international company also means that I will have a very strong CV when I return to New Zealand.”
Advice for other students
Jake, who graduated from AUT at the end of 2019, has some great advice for other students.
“My advice for future AUT students is to take every opportunity that you can.
“I never thought that the United States would be somewhere that I would want to live or work, but San Francisco is an amazing city and I’m loving every second of my time while I’m over here.”
