Master of Analytics student
The Master of Analytics helps you critically think about different ways to solve problems, says Ishmita Bedi who expects to complete her degree in mid-2019.
“I chose to study AUT’s Master of Analytics because I’m interested in using the enormous amount of data available to provide effective solutions to different problems. I would highly recommend this programme to those who like to use data to find new insights.
“When I graduate I’m planning to look for a job as an analyst, and use the knowledge and skills I’ve gained at AUT for the betterment of society at large.”
New approaches to solving problems
Being able to work on a variety of projects has been one of the highlights for Ishmita.
“I’ve enjoyed working on different projects as a part of my study, applying descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analyses to solve problems.
“The projects I’m currently working on include creating a data warehouse prototype for a supermarket chain, using probability maps to compare the Canterbury earthquake aftershocks, analysing the link between crime rates and social information, and optimising the cost of a water distribution network.”
She enjoys the range of topics the Master of Analytics covers, Ishmita says.
“The programme is a mix of different areas of analytics, including machine learning, data warehousing, statistics, optimisation and financial analysis. The academic staff are very helpful and friendly, and guide you throughout the learning experience.”
Advice for other students
Stay open to different opportunities, Ishmita advises other students.
“Try different things, get out of your comfort zone, learn from your mistakes and make the most of your AUT experience.”
Ishmita admits that getting out of her comfort zone was one of her biggest challenges, but participating in the AUT Edge Award has helped her open up to new things.
“I’ve attended several workshops where I could interact with different industry representatives, and talk about their latest projects and innovations. The workshops that cover how to create a LinkedIn profile, CV or cover letter, and how to prepare for job interviews have helped me a lot in preparing myself for the job market.
“I’m currently also working as a part-time teaching assistant for two maths papers, and am helping people achieve their fitness goals through my role as a Zumba instructor at the AUT gym.”
