Francesca Flores-Lim

Registered Nurse, Waitemata District Health Board
Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing)

She has always wanted a career where she can make a difference, says nursing alumna Francesca Flores-Lim who now works in a general medicine ward at North Shore Hospital, which is part of the Waitemata District Health Board.

“I’ve always wanted to follow a career that would allow me to offer a helping hand. Nursing aligned perfectly with my morals. In my second year at AUT I had a bit of a lightbulb moment when I looked around and saw a room full of people with hearts of gold. It was the moment when I realised that all of us are here for similar reasons, and all the passion around the room motivated me even more.”

After graduating from AUT at the end of 2020, Francesca now enjoys being able to apply what she learned at university to make a difference to people’s lives.

“What I enjoy most about my job as a nurse for North Shore Hospital is helping people when they’re vulnerable. Being that person that can comfort people when they need it is so rewarding.”

Finding her path
Francesca came to AUT based on the recommendation of other nursing students and health professionals.

“I had heard from many other students that AUT covers both the theory and practical side of nursing very well. The registered nurses I met had commended AUT’s nursing programme and the environment at AUT seemed very supportive.”

It’s a decision she hasn’t regretted, says Francesca whose studies were supported by a New Horizons Scholarship.

“I thoroughly enjoyed all the placements I’ve been on and the experiences and challenges I was exposed to. It’s crazy to see how much I’ve grown in my three years of study, and how much nursing has shaped the person I am today, and the values and morals I now hold.”

Advice for other students
Francesca has some great advice for other students.

“My advice is to study something you’re passionate about. There’s no point in working so hard to complete a degree that isn’t going to fulfil you after a day of work.”

She would highly recommend AUT’s nursing degree to other students.

“AUT’s nursing programme is well structured and covers all the criteria to help you become a fabulous nurse. Throughout your studies you gain so many experiences that other people will never be able to have.”
