Studying business is a great choice because of the range of careers it can lead to, says AUT alumnus Dane Deller who completed a Bachelor of Business in Management and Marketing.
“I liked the idea of having a degree that was flexible, and could lead to a wide range of jobs and opportunities. That’s why I decided to study business.”
It’s a decision he hasn’t regretted, says Dane who moved to Auckland from Mt Maunganui.
“I wanted to live in Auckland and had heard great things about AUT in secondary school and from people I knew. The campus is great, and I enjoyed meeting a lot of a new people at AUT. I met many of my friends in AUT’s student accommodation, the Wellesley Student Apartments near the AUT City Campus.”
Designed for change
AUT prepares students well for the ever-changing world, says Dane.
“It’s modern and it teaches ideas that are current to the changing business environment. The case studies for your assignments cover issues the business world is currently facing. That’s really important for learning how to keep up with global and local trends.”
Being able to gain workplace experience as part of his studies was another highlight for Dane.
“I did my final-year workplace experience for The Warehouse Group where I worked in the community and environment team. Working in the main support office with over 1,000 team members was definitely an exciting new experience. I was responsible for assisting with campaigns, and managing and planning campaign calendars. That was a great tool to learn for my future business career.”
Meaningful digital interactions
After graduating last year, Dane now works for Moloney & Moloney Ltd, which specialises in creating the strategy and content for clients’ social channels.
“My job includes coming up with campaigns, shooting content on and off site, creating content for social platforms, and organising our content calendar. My days don’t feel like work, which is a great position to be in.”
He constantly draws on what he learned at AUT, says Dane.
“Understanding how products are marketed to us and why gives me the ability to comprehend what’s relatable to our own target market. From there I can create a strategy that gets a product to a consumer in a way that’s relevant to current trends.”
“We employed Dane based on cultural fit with our wider team, the initiative he displays, and the critical thinking and confidence he brings to the table. We were looking for someone who could manage the end-to-end brand strategy and creative for businesses looking to improve their reputation online, and to work alongside our clients to identify and leverage the opportunity in social channels for their brands.
