Legal Assistant, Bagsic Law
Master of Laws

Technology has forever changed many business processes thereby necessitating new standards for privacy laws, says Benjamin Jose D. Ruste who explored this topic for his Master of Laws.

“Today, it's easy for employers to monitor and track their employees' activities and location. It made me want to understand the relationship between the employee's right to privacy and the employer's right to monitor employees.

“My Master of Laws research could be a means to provide and support ethical business standards and practices when it comes to regulating surveillance of electronic communication at work, especially in this digital era.”

A world-class legal education
His goal is to reach the pinnacle of knowledge in the legal profession, says Benjamin who came to AUT as an international student from the Philippines.

“As I've already earned my Juris Doctor degree and my master’s degree in business administration, it only seemed logical to pursue a Master of Laws. Since graduating from AUT, I’m working as a legal assistant in a law firm in Manukau, and have already applied to return to AUT for further study next year.”

Deciding to study at AUT was easy for him.

“AUT is internationally recognised as one of the best universities providing legal education in New Zealand. AUT came highly recommended by my friends who've had favourable outcomes in their own chosen professions. I've had the privilege of meeting some of the brightest minds in different fields of expertise here at AUT.”

Advice for other students
Benjamin, who graduated with his Master of Laws at the end of 2019, has some great advice for other students.

“If you're aiming for higher achievements, don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You'll find that most people are more than willing to assist you, however they can, when they see the effort you're putting into your endeavours.

“For example, the academic staff were more than willing to give me constructive feedback when I struggled to structure my research in a way that would support all the issues I wanted to take account of without getting side-tracked. I appreciate the time and attention that they've given me when they knew it would benefit me most.”

He would recommend the Master of Laws to other students aiming to advance their skills and deepen their knowledge of the legal profession, Benjamin says.

“AUT has provided me with globally competent mentors, state-of-the-art facilities and a supportive community of like-minded individuals that opened up opportunities for me.”
