Employer events run by Employability and Careers

The Employability and Careers team hosts a number of events each semester where students and alumni – as potential employees – can meet employers.

These events include:

Career fairs

Career fairs bring dozens of employers from the same industries together on campus for 3 to 4 hours. The employers set up stands so students can approach them to discuss graduate and internship possibilities.

2019 career fairs

  • Business & Economics - Semester 1
  • ICT & Engineering - Semester 1
  • Hospitality, Tourism, Events & Culinary Arts - Semester 2
  • Law - Semester 2
  • Culture & Society - Semester 2

Employability Matters

Run each semester, Employability Matters is a week-long series of on-campus presentations, workshops and panel discussions for AUT students. Employability Matters focuses on employability skills and highlights the importance of being prepared for the workplace.

There are inspirational leadership speakers during the week, as well as other employer presentations. Students can mix and network with the employers who attend.

Volunteering Expos

The Volunteering Expo gives organisations the ability to showcase on campus the volunteering opportunities they have available. Organisations attending include Engineering without Borders, StarJam, St John, Child Cancer Foundation, EcoMatters and the Surf Life Saving Northern Region. The expos run each semester.

Volunteering is strongly encouraged by Employability and Careers as a great way for students to build up workplace skills, improve confidence and give back to their local community.

Employer presentations

Employer presentations are a way for students to meet employers in a more informal setting. Individual employers come on campus to tell students about their organisation’s work and the graduate opportunities, internships and work experience they offer.

Presentations have included MYOB, Deloitte, BNZ, NZME, Heritage Hotel, district health boards and AR/VR Garage.

Speaker series

There is nothing more powerful than hearing a great leader talk about their career journey. AUT attracts a diverse and interesting number of speakers, including Thank You CEO Ben Thompson, Lightbox GM Hema Patel and Director of Commercial Tourism NZ Rene de Monchy and NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Graduate presentations

Many AUT graduates return to AUT to talk to students about their experiences in the workplace. Students love hearing from graduates and can pick up tips about how to approach an organisation and what employment is like in the ‘real world’.

Industry panels

Panel discussions involving industry and graduates give students more in-depth understanding of specific industry needs, expectations and challenges.  Science, ICT, business, hospitality, tourism and engineering representatives have all participated in industry panels at AUT.
