Working with passionate collaborators and clever students who push him to do better are what Dr Stephen MacDonell describes as the best part of his work.

As Professor of Software Engineering and Director of AUT’s Software Engineering Research Laboratory (SERL) he has plenty of opportunity to work with professional groups, software companies and individuals and to develop links between these organisations and our students.

Software engineering and information systems development is a broad sphere but the mission statement for the Lab that drives his work is being ‘passionately interested in people and their behaviours as they relate to software-intensive services’ and looking at the ‘lifetime’ of services in a real-world context.

Professor MacDonell's PhD is from the University of Cambridge and his recent career highlights include his role at the University of Otago as Head of Department of Information Science as well as co-authoring a range of research papers and a chapter in the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge.

He defines career success as having done meaningful research that improves how software is developed – in particular helping New Zealand companies and organisations improve how they create and sustain software – and as seeing as many postgraduate students as possible go on to have their own success as excellent researchers and teachers.
