Professor Jeffrey Hunter is considered a visionary in the area of statistics. It is that vision that has seen him become the recipient of the highest award given by the New Zealand Statistical Association, the Campbell Award, in 2006 and an Honorary Life Membership of the New Zealand Statistical Association.
His fresh approach to the study of mathematics led him to adopt international trends and design and implement the first analytics degree programme in New Zealand. His rationale was to better prepare AUT mathematical science students for the real face of business and industry, increasing their chances of employment.
He has travelled the world conducting research and has taken up visiting positions at universities throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.
His research focuses on the area of applied probability which includes Markov chains, semi-Markov processes, generalised matrix inverses, two-dimensional renewal theory and queueing theory – the latter has the potential to change the way commuter networks are designed, which in turn will help alleviate congestion and increase efficiency for commuters.
In 2005, Professor Hunter gained a Doctorate in Science for his work in Applied Probability – the first of its kind in his field of research at the time. Early in his career, he turned down a Commonwealth Scholarship, to take up a Fulbright grant, and he travelled to the University of North Carolina in the United States to complete a PhD in Statistics, which he promptly added to his Master of Science, with First Class Honours, in Mathematics gained from the University of Auckland.
