Professor Barry King is internationally known for his writings on stardom, celebrity and popular culture and will happily be drawn into conversation about its effects on society.
In 2011 he spent six months at the University of Southern California conducting research into the impact new technology is having on actors' employment, in particular the increasing use of avatars and the power of reality TV stars.
Other research interests include the new work order, which looks at flexible work patterns and the concept of a portfolio career, and social semiotics.
Professor King received his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Social Science from City University, London and his PhD in Sociology from the London School of Economics. He has taught in the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden and New Zealand.
He is the author of a number of articles that address issues such as mass media and social identity, reality TV as a form of life and digital stardom. He was a lead researcher for the Television Violence Report, 2003 and a co-editor and contributor to Studying the Event Film: the Lord of the Rings, Manchester University Press 2008. He is currently completing a book on the social origins of stardom.
