Overview:

I am employed as a research fellow at the Institute for Applied Ecology New Zealand at Auckland University of Technology after having completed a PhD in Antarctic microbial ecology recently. The majority of my current publications are derived from my PhD centred on understanding the microbial communities of geochemically diverse meltwater ponds in Antarctica and how they change with their environment. This work included a range of current molecular techniques specialising in low-biomass samples and the processing and analysis of high-throughput sequencing data. These publications provided the most comprehensive insight into the microbiology of these previously unknown systems, the basis of which is utilised in numerous current projects. I served as the primary investigator, completed almost all lab work and did the majority of manuscript preparation for all of these publications.

Since my PhD I have been involved with a range of projects centred on the molecular genetic analysis of low biomass, samples collected from extreme environments. All of this work has laid the foundation for my new research direction towards resolving microbiology of the aerosphere. We currently have numerous collaborations, two PhD students and multiple upcoming field expeditions which should provide the basis for a range of publications in this emerging field.

In addition to my scientific contributions, I am a passionate science communicator utilising a wide variety of platforms for my research and that of my colleagues. I have made significant contributions towards several online projects, the most successful of which, the Sci21 webcast series, has yielded over 560,000 views to August 2016.
