Academic appointments:

  • Visiting Professor, King’s College London (2012 - ongoing)

Qualifications:

  • BSc, Victoria University of Wellington
  • MSocSci, University of Waikato
  • DipPsych(Clin), University of Waikato
  • PhD, Victoria University of Wellington

Overview:

I trained as a clinical psychologist at Waikato University and then completed a PhD at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. My PhD research examined psychiatric symptoms and social support in unemployed people and resulted in four articles published in international psychology journals. A major component of my PhD research concerned the development of psychometrically robust measures for assessing complex psychological and behavioural constructs among disadvantaged groups. This interest remains prominent in my current research which is focused on measurement issues in neurological rehabilitation, mental health and palliative care.

After completing my PhD, I worked for the Psychological Service of the Department of Justice as a Clinical Psychologist and in private practice, until appointment as a Lecturer in Psychology at Victoria University in 1991. I have extensive experience from 11 years teaching Psychology of all aspects of undergraduate teaching including: curriculum design and development, course timetabling, assessment methods, lecturing large groups, designing laboratory classes, examining, quality assurance, pastoral counseling and student welfare. I have experience of coordinating large undergraduate courses and lecturing classes of more than 300 students. I have lectured in abnormal psychology, neuropsychology and research methods at the undergraduate level.

At the postgraduate level I coordinated and taught Abnormal Psychology for 10 years and was also the Director of the Postgraduate Clinical Psychology program at Victoria for six years. This intensive three-year course trained clinical psychologists in the scientist-practitioner or Boulder model. One major achievement of mine as director was to restructure the course from an applied Masters to a Postgraduate Diploma to enable clinical students to complete a PhD during their training. Throughout this stage of my career I maintained an active clinical practice including private practice, consulting at Porirua Psychiatric Hospital and later at Wellington Hospital Neurology 0utpatients.

In early 2002 I joined the University of Otago in Wellington as Associate Professor and Head of the Rehabilitation Teaching and Research Unit (RTRU) an inter-disciplinary, postgraduate, distance-teaching academic rehabilitation unit. As Head of the RTRU I had overall responsibility for managing 6.4 EFT academics, one secretary and an annual budget of around $NZ640, 000. After assuming leadership of the RTRU I increased both the number of staff and budget. This role gave me experience of managing an academic unit including distance-teaching and experience working in an inter-disciplinary health sciences environment. My major achievement as Head of the Rehabilitation Teaching and Research Unit was to turn the unit into a research-led teaching unit. For example, when I joined the RTRU I was the only academic with a PhD and when I left after five years there were five staff with a PhD and one with a Masters in Statistics (of 6 EFT academics). In my five years as Head of the RTRU I also: introduced quality procedures across all papers, replaced paper-based teaching with digital/online methods, initiated and produced two biennial research reports and developed the RTRU's first 5-year strategic plan.

In 2007 I joined King’s College London as Senior Lecturer in Rehabilitation in the Department of Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation and was promoted to Reader in 2009. My work at King’s had a large research component and my focus was on neurological rehabilitation particularly goal-setting and outcome measurement. I was the Principal Investigator on a large NIHR-SDO grant which examined community rehabilitation services for people with complex neurological conditions. This three-year, longitudinal project employed two research assistants and recruited over 400 patients discharged from nine separate inpatient rehabilitation services across London.

In March of 2012 I joined Auckland University of Technology as Professor of Psychology and Rehabilitation, a joint appointment between the School of Public Health and Psychosocial Studies and the School of Clinical Sciences. I currently teach a second-year undergraduate paper on Psychological Assessment to around 120 students each year in Semester 1 and I contribute to three PG rehabilitation papers.
