Overview:

Professor Patria Hume is a leader in the field of sport sciences, and a pioneer in science and technology for sport. She has an international reputation for research aimed at improving sport technique and reducing sports injuries using sports biomechanics, anthropometry and epidemiology. Patria is a key member of the development team for AUT Millennium, where AUT’s Sports Performance Research Institute NZ (SPRINZ) is based. She was director of SPRINZ from its inception in 2000 until 2009, and from 2011 to 2012. Her “Sport Risk Factors” research platform focuses on problem extent (e.g. rugby head injuries), injury mechanisms (e.g. concussion, lower limb injury), development/evaluation of injury prevention strategies (i.e. ACC SportSmart) and monitoring (e.g. body composition, biomechanics). AUT has one of the top 50 internationally ranked sport science research centres, and is ranked number 1 in NZ. From 2013 to 2015 Patria was Associate Dean Research of AUT's Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences.

One of the world's leading sports performance experts, in 2016, she gained the most prestigious award in her field – the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports (ISBS) Geoffrey Dyson Award. Professor Hume created the New Zealand SportSmart injury prevention programme in 1999 which has received world recognition and has been adopted internationally (eg. BokSmart). Patria's on-going research on sports injury mechanisms and effectiveness of injury prevention strategies has resulted in the expansion of SportSmart into sport specific programmes such as NetballSmart, RugbySmart and in the associated research programmes. Patria designed a novel modified Haddon Matrix and weighting factor method using quality rating effect scores for sport injury prevention (cited in Vriend 2017 Sports Medicine IF6.8 as first use of conceptual framework for sport).

Patria led the World Rugby project on long term player health outcomes including the effects of concussion, and on player protective equipment and prosthetic devices and hearing aid development for rugby. She has conducted world leading research using novel instrumented mouthguards to collect the frequency, magnitude and location of head impacts on the field during games and training to players. The results have impacted on policy and improved processes for concussion injury management for NZ sports via ACC guidelines, and for rugby internationally. The associated journal paper resulted in world-wide media (altmetrics score of 67), keynote presentations at Sports Medicine Australia conference 2017, three Tokyo University public lectures (Tokyo), BMJ invited editorial commenting on long-term player brain health, BMJ opinion piece review on call for tackle ban in UK etc. Patria led multi-disciplinary expansion into UK, Canada, USA and Australia for the Global-Rugby Health Research Programme focused on brain, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health.

Patria was a NZ Herald New Zealander of 2016 Finalist in recognition of the impact of her research work on concussion in rugby. She has been the lead researcher for the World Rugby long-term player health outcomes study, and of many ACC projects focused on sports injury prevention. Her biomechanics and kinanthropometry applied research work has been in collaboration with New Zealand national bodies for rowing, rugby, gymnastics, netball, badminton, hockey, soccer, basketball, tennis and athletics. One of only 15 certified criterion anthropometrists in the world, Patria was a lead researcher for the Sydney 2000 Olympics anthropometry project and received an International Olympic Committee diploma for her contribution to Olympic sport in 2001. Patria's collaborations includes international organisations (e.g. World Rugby, USA Rugby), athletes/coaches, industry partners (Zephyr Bioharness) & 50+ international academics. Patria led the winning bid to host the ISBS2018 conference.

Patria was the 2016 recipient of AUT's University Medal, for her dedication to, and sustained record in, producing high impact research, and her commitment to developing the next generation of sports biomechanics researchers.
Patria has supervised 23 PhD students and 11 Masters’ students to graduation with topics ranging from injury prevention strategies for concussion, to the cause and possible prevention of Achilles tendon injuries in triathletes, to finding ways to improve performance in running and rugby. A further nine PhD students are currently enrolled under her supervision.

Patria has a strong track record of impactful research with real-world benefits. From Jan 2012 to Dec 2017, Google Scholar citations of her work were 4342 (mean citations/article 23.1), h-index 33, i10-index 82. She has 185 peer-reviewed publications, and her journal articles have been published in Sports Medicine (IF6.8), British Journal of Sports Medicine (IF4.9), Sports Biomechanics(IF1.5) – all considered top journals in her field. She has held 30 grants between 2012-17 as Principal Investigator, with a combined value of $1,824,589 (79% external 21% AUT). She is an editorial board member for Sports Medicine, and has held directorships on Sports Medicine New Zealand, Sport Science New Zealand, and the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry. She is a Fellow and Director of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports.
