Overview:

Dr Nurul I Sarkar is an Associate Professor specializing in network design, modelling and performance evaluation. He is a regularly invited keynote speaker at various national and international fora. He has more than 25 years of teaching experience in universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has taught a range of subjects, including computer networking, data communications, computer hardware, and eCommerce. Nurul is very active in research and postgraduate supervision. He is the author of more than 180 referred technical articles. Improving the Performance of Wireless LANs: A Practical Guide (Taylor & Francis, 2014) is his second book. His first book "Tools for Teaching Computer Networking and Hardware Concepts" was published by IGI Global in 2006 which received a lot of commendations worldwide. Nurul's research appeared in various refereed journal and conference proceedings, including IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on Education, Ad Hoc Networks, Journal of Network and Computer Applications, Wireless Networks, Int. Journal of Wireless & Mobile Networks, Int. Journal of Wireless Networks and Broadband Technologies, Int. Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education, and SIGCSE Bulletin. Dr Sarkar has successfully supervised more than 20 postgraduate research students including six PhD to completion. He is currently a primary supervisor for 4 PhD students. He is often sought out by postgraduate students as a supervisor for networking topics. He has examined about 22 PhD theses. Dr Sarkar is a member of various professional organisations and societies, including IEEE Communications Society, Vehicular Technology Society, and Australasian Association for Engineering Education. He served as conference general co-chair for ITNAC’19 and CECNet’18; technical program committee (TPC) co-chair/vice-chair for ICOIN’19, IEEE DASC’16, SmartGridComm-2016, IEEE ICC’14, APCC’12, TENCON’10 and ITNAC’10. He also served as TPC member for various leading networking conferences including IEEE Globecom, ICC, WCNC, PIMRC, ISCC, and ACM SIGCSE as well as track and session chairs for several national and international fora. Nurul served as Chairman of the IEEE joint NZ North, South and Central ComSoc chapter for a decade which won the ‘Best Chapter Achievement Award’ in 2012. Nurul is a senior member of IEEE.

Research interests:

My research interests are in multi-disciplinary areas, including network design, modelling and performance evaluation; emergency Wi-Fi, QoS, cognitive radio networks, wireless mesh and routing protocols, Nano-networks, optical networks, 5G Communication and networking, high density WLANs, VoIP and Video over WLANs, TCP over WLANs, vehicular communications, IoT architecture and secure routing for IoT, medical data modelling and analysis, and radio propagation measurements, network security, curriculum development, and tools to enhance methods for teaching and learning computer networking and hardware concepts.
