Overview:

With more than 38 years of clinical experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, Professor Duncan Reid knows what he’s talking about; owning and operating his own private practice for 17 years before taking up a full-time teaching position at the Department of Physiotherapy at AUT in 1999 — where he is still a practising clinician.

As a leading expert in sport injury prevention and musculoskeletal physiotherapy, Professor Reid has worked with high performance sports athletes for more than 30 years including as a member of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Medical Teams from the 1988 Seoul Olympics through until the Sydney Olympics in 2000, acting as chief physiotherapist for the 1992, 1994 and 1996 games. In addition to teaching and research, Professor Reid continues to work with elite sports in both clinical and advisory roles, including current partnerships with Rowing New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand.

Outside of his professional life, Professor Reid is an ardent sportsman and surf lifesaver. He is a World, Australian and NZ National Masters Champion in Surf Boat Racing, as well as a keen cyclist, swimmer and golfer.

Professor Reid is a Fellow of the New Zealand College of Physiotherapy and a Life Member of the New Zealand Manipulative Physiotherapists Association (NZMPA) and Physiotherapy NZ (PNZ). He is also the former Vice President of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physiotherapists Association (IFOMPT) and is an editorial board member for the journals Manual Therapy, Journal of Orthopaedic Sports Physical Therapy, and the Deputy Editor of the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy.

He has significant interest in the teaching of manual and manipulative therapy especially manipulation to the cervical spine, a topic he has taught both nationally and internationally for more than 25 years. More recently, his research has revolved around sport injury incidence, prevention and movements screening.

Professor Reid has published more than200 peer review journal articles and book chapters, and his research has been instrumental in the development of clinical practice guidelines for knee, shoulder and forearm injuries.

Research interests:

I am a musculoskeletal physiotherapist and an applied researcher developing and using
movement screening tools as well as observational and cross-sectional population-based
studies. The main theme of my research is sports injury incidence and injury prevention I have been an invited keynote speaker internationally and locally, taught and presented my research findings in Europe. Middle East and Asia (RC1). I am the deputy editor for the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy and associate editor of the
Journal of Sports and Orthopaedic Physical Therapy as well as a member of the editorial
boards of other journals. I have research collaborations with colleagues in the USA
I have been successful in gaining external research funding from the Accident
Compensation Corporation to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of secondary school
students, parents, coaches, referees and general practitioners to sports related concussion.
(This is one of a number of research projects run under the auspices of the Sports
Performance Research Centre at AUT. I am a co leader of the Sports Injury Prevention group. I
am also the Southern Hemisphere representative in a research cluster called the International
Movements Screening and Interventions Group (RC 5). This group is also linked to Arthritis
Research UK Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis has a research programme
interested in the long-term impact of sports injuries and its role in the development of
osteoarthritis.

A significant amount of my research is being applied within the High-Performance Sport New
Zealand framework and is aimed at developing more robust reporting systems for injury
surveillance and management. These changes are now the normal practice at HPSNZ. I have supervised twelve masters student to completion on topics related to sports injury incidence, movement screening the aetiology and management of sports related lower limb injuries. These students have published from these theses I currently have
three doctoral and four masters students working on further projects in this area. I have also had an interest in the physiotherapy management of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. I have also been awarded life membership of
Physiotherapy groups for my contributions.
