My BA(Hons) and PhD were competed at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, respectively. Under the supervision of Dr Malcolm Gerloch and Prof. Melinda Duer, the focus of my PhD was a spectroscopic and computational study of f-f transitions in lanthanide complexes. During this time I spent six months doing spectroscopic studies with Prof. Elmars Krausz at the Australian National University. I then undertook postdoctoral research on the spectroscopy of colloidal quantum dots and carbon nanotubes with Dr Garry Rumbles at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado. This was followed by a second postdoc with Prof. Greg Scholes at the University of Toronto, where I studied photo-induced processes in colloidal nanostructures. In 2009 I joined the Chemistry faculty at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where, in 2015, I was promoted to Associate Professor. I came to AUT in June 2018.

Research interests in photophysical processes that enable new functionality in hybrid-nanoscale materials, including:
- Factors controlling multi-exciton recombination in colloidal quantum dots.
- Exciton-plasmon coupling in semiconductor/metal hybrid nanosystems.
- Interfacial processes in quantum dot exciton relaxation dynamics.
- Interaction of nanoparticles with biologically important molecules for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.
- Temperature-controlled and time-resolved quantum dot fluorescence and fluorescence correlation techniques to probe multi-exciton dynamics, blinking and particle diffusion.
- Synthesis and characterization of novel core/shell quantum dots and nanocrystals.
- Semi empirical computational modeling of photo-induced dynamics in nanoscale systems
