Biography:

Lydia Cheung was born in Hong Kong. She attended Boston University, majoring in Economics and International Relations, and graduated summa cum laude (with the highest honor) in 2007. She was then admitted to the Economics Ph.D. program in the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) and graduated in 2012. Prior to coming to AUT, Lydia was visiting assistant professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA.

Research Summary:

Lydia Cheung conducts empirical research in Industrial Organization and Applied Microeconomics. Her doctoral thesis concerns the Upward Pricing Pressure test, a new screen used by antitrust agencies to estimate price increase in proposed mergers, and compares it against structural merger model predictions. Having spent a year at Amazon.com in Seattle, USA as research scientist, she is also interested in using big, micro-level datasets to study business-relevant topics such as demand estimation, repeated purchases, and new product discovery. 

Current Research Projects:

  • Horizontal mergers: Comparison between structural model prediction and merger screens
  • Bayesian consumer learning of unobserved brand qualities from multiple product categories
