Biography:

Nurul Sarkar is an Associate Professor specializing in network design, modelling and performance evaluation. He is a regularly invited keynote speaker at various national and international fora. He has more than 22 years of teaching experience in universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has taught a range of subjects, including computer networking, advanced network technologies, next generation networking, computing technology in society, data communications, computer hardware, and eCommerce. Nurul is very active in research and postgraduate supervision. He is the author of more than 165 referred technical articles. Improving the Performance of Wireless LANs: A Practical Guide (Taylor & Francis, 2014) is his second book. His first book Tools for Teaching Computer Networking and Hardware Concepts was published by IGI Global in 2006 which received a lot of commendations worldwide. Nurul's research appeared in various refereed journal and conference proceedings, including IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Transactions on Education, Journal of Network and Computer Applications, Elsevier Journal of Computer Networks, Wireless Networks (Springer), Journal of Selected Areas in Telecommunications, Int. Journal of Wireless & Mobile Networks, Int. Journal of Wireless Networks and Broadband Technologies, Int. Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education, and SIGCSE Bulletin. Dr Sarkar has successfully supervised about 20 postgraduate theses including PhD to completion. He is currently supervising 7 PhD (primary supervisor for four), 2 MCIS and 1 MISDF thesis students. He is often sought out by postgraduate students as a supervisor for networking topics. He has examined about 40 post-graduate theses (including about 20 PhD theses). Dr Sarkar is a member of various professional organisations and societies, including IEEE Communications Society and Australasian Association for Engineering Education. He currently serves on editorial boards of several prestigious international journals and a guest editor for IEEE Communications Magazine (2017-18). He served as associate technical editor for the IEEE Communications Magazine (2005-2010), TPC Co-chair/Vice-chair for mobile and wireless networking track (ICOIN'19, CECNet’17, IEEE DASC’16, SmartGridComm'16, APWCCSE’16, IEEE ICC’14, APCC'12, TENCON’10 and ITNAC’10). He also served as TPC member for various leading networking conferences (e.g. IEEE Globecom, ICC, WCNC, PIMRC, ISCC, and ACM SIGCSE) as well as track and session chairs for several national and international fora. Dr Sarkar served as chairman of the IEEE joint NZ North/South/Central Communications Society Chapter (2014-18, 2012, 2007, 2005) which won the best chapter achievement award in 2012. He is a senior member of IEEE.

Nurul’s research interests are in multi-disciplinary areas, including network design, modelling and performance evaluation; next generation Wi-Fi, disaster resilient network design, wireless MAC and routing protocols, cross-layer design optimization, vehicular communications, nano-scale sensor communication, optical networks, 5G communication and networking, optimization of gateway congestion control, QoS, cognitive radio networks, wireless mesh and routing protocols, medical data modelling and analysis, VoIP and Video over WLANs, TCP over WLANs, IoT Architecture and routing, radio propagation measurements, network security, curriculum development, and tools to enhance methods for teaching and learning computer networking and hardware concepts.
