Why is AUT a great choice for your child

AUT has come a long way in the 23 years since we became a university. We’re ranked in the top 1% of the world’s best modern universities (Times Higher Education rankings), and are one of New Zealand’s largest universities, with 250 programmes to choose from. Our vision is to provide our students with exceptional learning experiences, so they become outstanding graduates with the skills, confidence and knowledge to excel in the world.

We recognise that students arrive at AUT with an immense amount of potential. It’s our role to help unlock their potential so they’re able to find their greatness - this could happen during a key moment with an influential lecturer, a conversation with a student mentor, or an educational experience outside the classroom that opened their minds to new possibilities and guides them on a pathway to greatness.

A world-class university environment

AUT embraces modern technologies to prepare students for a rapidly changing world.

We encourage:

  • Innovation and entrepreneurship
  • The ability to explore new technologies
  • Challenging routine thinking and problem solving

Our knowledgeable and approachable academic staff are experts in their fields. Many have come from industry backgrounds and remain active in AUT's research centres and institutes. Their research activity benefits students as they can contribute to the latest developments as they learn - from reforming our financial system to help fight the climate crisis through to data science technology for mental health diagnosis. Our lecturers are passionate about sharing their knowledge so their students can make an impact on the world.

AUT has three modern campuses in Auckland featuring award-winning buildings and collaborative and functional learning areas, auditoriums and research spaces. We also have several world-class facilities including New Zealand’s top sports science facility, AUT Millennium, and our motion capture lab, a creative studio for motion capture production in performance for use in innovative digital projects.

AUT’s success in creating transformational educational spaces has been recognised with a five-star ranking for teaching and facilities, awarded by the university rankings organisation QS.

Support for success

AUT is a diverse university with staff and students from 140 countries. We are committed to building a safe and positive environment made up of people and ideas from all walks of life. We understand that sometimes students can be nervous about a new life at university. AUT has a range of support services and facilities and clubs and activities – it’s very important for new students to feel happy in their new environment as this will help them to achieve academic success.

AUT is here to support those thinking of studying with us, current students and AUT graduates – we’re able to offer guidance and support at every step of the way. If your child is at the start of their journey, and unsure if AUT is the right choice for them, our Future Students team can talk through their options to find out which courses match their long-term goals. You can make a booking to speak with someone in our team in person, by phone or via video chat.

Our Student Hub is available to help and support students across every aspect of life at university. Their role is to provide information and to help find solutions for students with any queries or concerns from academic advice through to personal wellbeing.

AUT is proud of our students and graduates. Relationships between graduates and the university are lifelong. AUT alumni are an inspiration for our current students as they can see how our alumni have worked towards and achieved their goals.

Career prospects

AUT’s innovative teaching, excellent reputation, and combination of theoretical and practical learning means our graduates are highly favoured by employers.

One of the benefits of choosing a degree at AUT is that students can get workplace experience as part of their programme. They are often able to take on work experience or an internship with one of AUT’s partner organisations. This means that AUT graduates enter the job market with practical skills, specific experience and industry contacts. Some programmes also involve studying in realistic workplace scenarios for example at AUT’s Integrated Health Clinic or in AUT’s student-run PR consultancy and at our TV and radio stations.

AUT has a dedicated Employability and Careers team. They offer a wide range of services to guide students on to their career pathway and give them a hand to stand out to employers. This support extends for a further two years after graduation to ensure your child feels supported throughout their university days and beyond.

We will welcome your child to university - and give them a great start for their life ahead.
