Japanese-Speech-Competition

AUT is proud to host the annual Auckland Regional Secondary School Japanese Speech Festival again. This year, there will be three categories: Year 11, Years 12 and 13 combined, and the Open Category. We are excited to once again receive sponsorship from Nisui-Kai - Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Auckland Inc, with the winner of the Years 12 and 13 category receiving a return trip to Japan.

This year we invite participation from schools in Northland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato, as well as Auckland.

Whānau and friends are welcome to come along and enjoy the festival and support the participants. In fact, we are happy to have anyone from the general public interested in the Japanese language and culture.

Invitation for supporting performances

In addition to speech presenters, we would also like to invite groups or individuals to perform dances, songs, martial arts or anything related to the Japanese culture. These acts are not part of the competition, so it’s a great opportunity to show off your hidden talent.

Speech contest requirements and eligibility

  • Years 12 and 13 students will now have a brief Q&A after their speech
  • Register for the Open Category if you have at least one native-Japanese-speaker parent, or you have been educated in Japan for more than two years
  • Speeches should be 2.5 to 3 minutes long and can be on any topic of your choice
  • You should prepare one PowerPoint slide of imagery to visually enhance your speech. The slide, with the title of the speech (in both Japanese and English) included, should be submitted to your Japanese teacher who will forward it to AUT on your behalf by 4pm, Friday 2 August.

Deadline for registration

Registration will close on Friday 26 July.
