Auckland University of Technology Law School Te Wānanga Aronui o Tāmaki Makau Rau, in collaboration with the New Zealand Women’s Law Journal – Te Aho Kawe Kaupapa Ture a ngā Wāhine, are now seeking abstracts for papers for a symposium on Law and Gender: Beyond Patriarchy. The Symposium will be held at the Auckland University of Technology on Tuesday 1 February 2022.

Now is a critical time for gender-related legal issues in Aotearoa New Zealand. In the past decade, the legal landscape has changed markedly, with the adoption of the Marriage Amendment Act 2013, continued debate on the gender pay gap, the enactment of the Abortion Law Reform Act 2020, and the introduction of legislation banning conversion therapy (recently passing its first reading in August 2021). However, our legal framework is not yet free of gendered power dynamics, the legacy of colonisation, and (un)conscious bias. Significant challenges remain, such as the privileging of colonised assumptions; inadequate responses to gender-based violence; the pathologisation of trans or gender-diverse identities; persistent barriers to accessing justice for cisgender women, trans women and other trans people; overrepresentation of Māori women in prison; and workplace sexual harassment and exploitation.

This symposium focuses on contemporary legal issues, questions, and developments at the intersection of gender, race, class, ability and other personal identities that engage with the forward-thinking theme of law and gender beyond patriarchy.

Abstract submission

We seek proposals from academics and researchers, law practitioners, and students that draw on the themes described above. Although Aotearoa New Zealand remains the primary focus, proposals exploring comparative legal issues in other jurisdictions are welcome. Submissions including varied perspectives (for instance, mana wāhine, class critical theory, critical race theory, feminist legal theory, law and economics, law and society) are encouraged. Equitable representation from various communities and diverse identities (for example in relation to age, class, disability, national origin, race, gender, sex, sexuality) will be considered in the selection of abstracts.

In addition to providing an opportunity for presentation of research, this symposium aims to bring together scholars, practitioners and others interested in the range of issues highlighted above to create a forum for the discussion of the challenges the legal status quo has created. This dialogue will help inform the presenters’ work and create collaboration across the legal profession and academia.

Symposium presenters will be offered an opportunity to publish their papers in a future special issue of the New Zealand Women’s Law Journal – Te Aho Kawe Kaupapa Ture a ngā Wāhine. Further details on the submission and publication process will be made available at a later date.
