Waste initiatives at AUT

Worm-farm-herb-garden

  • External and internal rubbish and recycling bins introduced on AUT campuses;
  • Food waste collections in Refuel café, the AUT main catering kitchen, and the Counter and #newsfeed café kitchens;
  • All packaging provided at AUT cafes is reusable, compostable, or recyclable.
  • Eight worm farms in the School of Hospitality and Tourism
  • Recycling electronic equipment and batteries across the three campuses
  • Lawn clippings and mulch from tree prunings at the North, South and City campuses are composted on campus
  • Furniture that can no longer be used at AUT is donated to charities, or components recycled

Waste audits

AUT completed a waste audit of all three campuses in October 2012 and again in October 2015.

Three main areas were measured in the audits:

  1. Recyclables in the ‘waste stream’ (destined for landfill)
  2. Contamination in recycling (waste or non-recyclables in the recycling bins)
  3. Compostable items in the waste stream

The audit showed:

  • Recyclables in the waste stream decreased from 28% in 2012 to 18% in 2015;
  • Reduction in recyclables in student accommodation waste bins from 39% in 2012, to 14% in 2015; and
  • Recycling contamination rate is 33% across all campuses.
