Growing up in Fiji, Shirley Yuen says she will always be an “island girl” at heart.
Coming to New Zealand for her tertiary studies, Shirley completed a Bachelor of Communication Studies in 2010 and began working at AUT.
As a student Shirley worked with the First Year Experience Team and after graduating, she moved into the position as a Student Administrator with the School of Language and Culture.
“When I was with the First Year Experience Team, I realised I really like working in a tertiary environment. It felt like my “calling” and I knew this was what I wanted to do.
“I was able to use my own experiences to help other students and share with them all the tips that I found helpful during my own studies. I thought that was really rewarding.
“When I was in the School of Language and Culture, I really loved being able to set students onto the right path and give them the advice that helped me. It’s such a rewarding role, especially when they graduate, I feel really proud for those whom I’ve helped.”
Shirley is now the Student Administrator for the Bachelor of Arts in Event Management, and has enjoyed this role since 2014.
“In a nutshell, I look after all aspects of the student’s enrolment. From acceptance into the programme until completion, my role is to make sure our students have a smooth and enjoyable study experience.”
Shirley has been part of AUT for over ten years and says this is because of the people within the university.
“There are so many opportunities here for staff and students and there is a culture of togetherness, like a family, that is awesome to be around.”
