Bachelor of Māori Development overview

The Bachelor of Māori Development offers opportunities for students to develop and apply knowledge and skills required in the workplace from a Māori perspective.

The degree has two majors:

Māori Development

Gives an overview of Māori development from political, economic and social points of view. In addition, graduates will leave confident in Te Reo and tikanga Māori. Cooperative education with internships in industry is an integral part of the qualification in a student’s final year.

Māori Media

This major integrates Te reo and tikanga with leading edge media technologies. Students are given hands-on experience in media and broadcasting through the cooperative education programme.

Additional majors and/or minors

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Māori Development may choose a second major from the list of additional majors available from outside their degree. Minors are also available in these subjects. The availability of additional majors and minors will depend on timetabling and subject restrictions, and in some cases, choosing an additional major or minor may require students to undertake extra points to complete their degree.

AUT encourages early application. This programme will remain open until all places have been filled.  Recognition of Prior Learning is available for those who already have a good understanding of Te reo Māori language.

A Bachelor of Arts with a major in Māori Development is also available. The Bachelor of Arts offers conjoint degree and double major options.

Diploma of Māori Development and Certificate of Māori Development

The Certificate and Diploma programme's cover the first and second year papers of the Bachelor of Māori Development Degree programme.

If you have successfully completed two years of the degree and unable to continue you may exit with a Diploma in Māori Development qualification. 

If you complete one year you may exit with a Certificate in Māori Development.
