Te Reo Māori Beginner and Intermediate Courses

AUT's Te Reo Māori courses combine cutting edge technology with quality, fun teaching. Broaden your understanding of New Zealand's indigenous language and culture.

Cost: Nil-tuition fee

In our commitment to building an inclusive Aotearoa/New Zealand and in recognition of the value of te reo me ngā tikanga Māori, AUT University offers Māori language beginner to intermediate courses as a nil-tuition fee programme.

The nil-tuition fee is available to domestic and international students. The nil-tuition fee applies to the Introduction to Conversational Māori, Te Kākano Māori Language 1, Te Kākano Māori Language 2, Te Pihinga Māori Language 1, Te Pihinga Māori Language 2.

If you fail the paper but want to re-enrol you may do so but required to pay the full tuition fee.

Beginner courses

The beginner courses will follow themes which will reinforce grammar and vocabulary but will be sufficiently general to enable you to have not studied Te Reo Māori before to participate and benefit.

Intermediate courses

Intermediate oral and written skills in Te Reo Māori are developed from the beginner courses. Listening and reading comprehension skills are advanced through interactive activities.

Advanced courses 

Those who are proficient in te reo Māori can enrol in the papers below. Each paper costs approximately $820.

Course details

Semester 1, 2018 enrolments are now open. Our classes are taught by Te Ara Poutama, the Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Development. All five papers below are offered for free to domestic and international students.

  • No prior learning necessary for the MAOR500 or MAOR501 level papers
  • Classes are limited to 30 students and will close once full
