Research Summary:

Muiris who is from Ireland has worked as senior lecturer at the Institute of Technology, Tralee and before that at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He is a speaker of Irish (Gaelic) and French.

Beginning as a teacher of Irish, he has worked for nearly 30 years as a teacher and researcher in the areas of Irish language revitalisation, bilingualism and multilingualism. His PhD published in Irish explored insights  into the revitalisation of Hebrew in Israel  1889-1922 and applied these comparatively to the case of Irish.  Muiris is still driven by the same questions he began his journey with, such as, “What does it take for people to really live and love a language?”   

Additionally, he is motivated by exploring the idea of how people acquire a language versus learn a language.  He is also continually fascinated by the connections he sees between language groups globally as they each live their languages on a daily basis and work towards their regeneration and revitalisation.    

Current Research Projects:

Professor Ó Laoire is currently working on two new publications to be released next year.  The book “An Introduction to Multilingualism”co-authored with  Larissa Aronin, Oranim  (Edinburgh University Press)
is expected in early 2012 .  Another book, with Joshua Fishman, Larissa Aronin, and David Singleton, on language policy in multilingual settings will also be released later that year.
