Scott Pollock’s overseas experience introduced him to a rainbow of diverse landscapes and what he learnt from his travels was that the people are what make a place unique.

He says experiencing other cultures made him think about home.  “I appreciated my own country more and the role Māori play in making New Zealand such a special place. I wanted to be a part of that and the language seemed like a good place to start.”

The 34-year-old is an analyst in institutional and commercial banking at the ANZ National Bank and started taking evening te reo classes at AUT because the time and location were so convenient for him. “It’s so handy because I work in town,” he says. “But it’s a personal thing I wanted to do – I believe anything that makes you a more rounded person is good for your career.”

Scott says the AUT learning environment made him feel at ease. “It’s really supportive between the students - everyone wants to help each other. It’s whanau-based learning rather than people fighting for grades.”

About to finish his first year of te reo study, Scott says he plans to continue learning the language and is confident he can achieve this through AUT. “I’d like to become fluent – that’s the goal.”
