Ask Sara-Lea O’Neill which iwi she hails from and she’ll proudly say ‘Ngāti Pakeha’. While her whakapapa links her to Ireland, Sara-Lea says growing up in the Taranaki region and being raised on a farm have given her a strong link with the land and a natural interest in te ao Māori.
The Bachelor of Māori Development student plans to major in Māori media and says she is certain having an understanding of te reo Māori me nga tikanga will stand her in good stead.
She says learning te reo Māori is about much more than vocabulary and grammar. “I think it’s really important for the future of this country that te reo Māori is heard more in our society. If I can be a part of that and help to create change, then that’s all the more reason to learn.”
Sara-Lea says after learning te reo at other tertiary institutions she rates AUT’s teaching as the best. “You don’t just learn te reo, you also learn waiata and karakia and tikanga is incorporated into everything you do. There’s also a really strong sense of whanaungatanga in the classroom.”
