Heta Gardiner attended kohanga reo and kura kaupapa so by the time he enrolled at AUT University he had more than surpassed beginner’s te reo classes.

But he says there are varying levels of fluency and in order to get his dream job in Māori media he knew he needed to upskill. Now working as a te reo script writer for Kura productions, Heta says, “I have to keep my te reo Māori sharp, so it is about continuing my learning. I can always keep improving and that’s definitely what I’ve done since studying at AUT.”

Heta says receiving expert tutorial from academics such as renowned author Professor John Moorfield has provided him with new knowledge he will be able to apply in his work. “Professor Moorfield focuses strongly on grammar, which is something I hadn’t really learnt about in depth. It was so helpful because he doesn’t just correct you, he actually explains the theory behind it.”

“Improving my te reo will be helpful in any interview situation and if I hadn’t been to any of the wananga I have no doubt that my te reo Māori wouldn’t be as good as it is now.”
