Niwa MilroyNIWA MILROY, TŪHOE; TE ARAWA
BACHELOR OF MĀORI DEVELOPMENT – MĀORI MEDIA MAJOR

While many Māori kids grew up speaking English, Rongomaiāniwaniwa (Niwa) Milroy’s father Wharehuia, made a point of ensuring the only language he spoke to her as she was growing up was Māori.

Niwa (Tūhoe, Te Arawa) is now a presenter on Mäori Television. She studied media and television papers at Te Ara Poutama and attributes her success to her lecturers. “Before I took up the course I was not very ambitious and did not really care what I did, but now I know that even a small town
Mäori girl like me can achieve whatever she sets her eyes on,” she says.

Her greatest passion is to be part of a revolution where all things Māori are accepted; she hopes Māori culture and language will extend far beyond just a television station to become an integral part of New Zealand society.

She says more Māori communicators are needed to achieve this dream. “It would be great to see more Māori students enter the communications industry to have a balance of Māori in media. With the advent of Māori television there are more job opportunities and students have something to fall back on if they need a hand with their internship or guidance on how they can further their career in the media,” she says.

And she has a message for all those students out there, “New avenues and new opportunities are open for you. Use them well. Always keep your eyes on the prize - no matter how hard things get, just keep going. In the end, the only person you can depend on is yourself. So do your best.”
