Prior to this, she worked as the Arts and Audience Development producer at The Edge. The Edge comprises the Aotea Centre, the Civic, the Auckland Town Hall and Aotea Square. Within these venues, Lisa organised community ventures and managed the Hip-Hop Summit and AUT Māori Expo. She has also completed the Diploma of Event Management at AUT, which complimented many of the skills she had learnt under the Māori Development degree.
Lisa grew up surrounded by whānau with a strong Māori background. She still spends a lot of her time on her Ngāti Whātua o Orakei marae. She says the course united business skills – such as accounting and management practices – within a “Māori way” framework with Te Reo and tikanga courses. “There was heaps of support there,” she says. Much of the support came in the small details, such as tutors who were often around and easy access to computers.“This qualification gives you a strong foundation in understanding how businesses work.” “Expect to work hard”, she says to students thinking of taking this course. “Expect to put in the time to get the rewards.” But she says most students can succeed. “With all the help, there's really no excuse to fail.”
