Important information on this qualification:

With recent changes to the tertiary environment, there has been a government cap on student numbers. This limits the funding across the tertiary sector. With capped student numbers, there are limited places available in programmes offered through the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences for 2012.

Therefore, the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences will not be accepting any year one enrollments to the Bachelor of Dance for 2012. In 2012 a further review of the programme will be undertaken to determine whether or not a 2013 year one intake will be possible.

For further enquiries, please contact Debra Spinetto, Programme Information Advisor for the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences on:

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

WHAT THIS QUALIFICATION COVERS

This degree provides an opportunity to study and achieve an in-depth practical and theoretical understanding of dance. Areas of study include ballet, jazz and contemporary techniques, choreography, dance education, drama and the study of dance in diverse social and cultural practices. Students also study anatomy and physiology, nutrition, psychology and discover dance research in a creative community.

  • Elective Papers
Elective study options enable students to specialise in related dance fields, for example expressive therapies, small business management, event planning, English or other subjects that are necessary for teaching at secondary schools.

  • Royal Academy Of Dance
Students may opt to take the Royal Academy of Dance electives leading to eligibility for RAD Registered Teacher Status upon the completion of their degree.

  • Cooperative Education
In their cooperative education papers in year three, students have the opportunity to gain experience in a dance field or dance related organisation of their choice. Cooperative education learning is more than work experience; it is a strategy for students to apply theoretical knowledge to practice and advance dance skills through reflection and critical analysis.

  • Additional Minors
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Dance may choose a minor from the list of minors available from outside their degree. The minor would replace the elective component of the degree, and its availability will depend on timetabling. Students who choose to do a minor would be required to undertake extra points to complete their degree.

  • AUT Dance Company
The AUT Dance Company is a unique model in the New Zealand tertiary dance scene. This entrepreneurial model is designed to enhance the sense of artistic community between students, staff, alumni and the dance industry – a core value of the AUT Dance qualification. Alumni, AUT Dance staff and other professional choreographers are invited to choreograph for the company. This innovative approach to choreographic research is integral to the Bachelor of Dance’s teaching philosophy and the wider dance community.
