Research Summary:

How do we help athletes improve their human performance and achieve the Olympic ideals of “Citius, Altius, Fortius - Faster, Higher, Stronger”? Professor Hume collaborates with her postgraduate students and international colleagues in sports performance biomechanics, sports injury biomechanics, sports anthropometry and sports injury prevention. Novel solutions have emerged to address coaches’ questions. Examples include the gymnastics vaulting feedback system, rowing technique analysis using boat instrumentation and the AUT goggles training system, netball shooting analysis, grinding biomechanics of Team New Zealand sailors, shin guard and mouthguard impact testing, the Sydney 2000 Olympics anthropometry project, and the ACC SportSmart injury prevention programme.

Patria was ISRRNZ Director from its inception until 2008. Patria’s research focuses on improving sport performance using sports biomechanics and sports anthropometry, and focuses on reducing sporting injuries by investigating injury mechanisms and injury prevention methods. She has provided applied biomechanics research and consultancy to a variety of national organisations, teams and athletes focusing on research with New Zealand Gymnastics, Rowing New Zealand, and Netball New Zealand. Patria received an International Olympic Committee Diploma in Sport in 2002, and a New Zealand Gymnastics 20 year service award in 2005, in recognition of her sports science research and service for New Zealand Gymnastics.

Patria has published in collaboration with her colleagues 91 journal articles, 51 edited articles, 4 book chapters, 141 abstracts or full papers in conference proceedings, 196 technical reports, a TV/video series on human potential, and educational CDs and resources for SportSmart and coach education programmes. She has supervised 16 PhD and 8 Masters theses students to completion and she currently is supervising 8 PhD and 3 Masters theses students.

  2. Scott Brown: Risk factors for ACL injuries in rugby: influence of gender, leg dominance and previous injury during cutting maneuvers.
  3. Doug King (2012-2014): Sports-related concussions in New Zealand: Costs, incidence, assessment, identification, knowledge and management. This is Doug's second PhD.
  4. Lisa McDonnell* (2008-2011): Canoe racing biomechanics instrumentation and feedback.
  5. Stephen Hollings* (2009-2012): The successful transition from elite junior athlete to elite senior athlete: Implications for athlete retention and the design of junior development programmes.

  7. Anna Lorimer*: Injury in triathletes: what are the risk factors and possible mechanism of Achilles tendon injuries in triathletes and how can they be prevented?
