Ripple effect
Mike Grogan started at AUT with his eye on a Diploma in Outdoor Recreation - he finished with a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation and his own tourism company on the Coromandel Peninsula. While on the diploma course, Mike did a two-week placement with Cathedral Cove Kayaks, a tourism company specialising in guided tours in the Hahei Marine Reserve. He stayed on at AUT to complete his Bachelor degree but the experience of the placement stayed with him and 18 months ago he became sole owner of the business.
With seven tour guides working in the peak season, Mike’s role can see him turning his hand from front-of-house receptionist duties to guiding kayak tours to marketing and advertising.
“Like most jobs it comes with its fair share of challenges but is hugely rewarding and a lot of fun. It is pretty simple, had I not attended AUT I would not be doing what I am doing today. Looking at it that way, it was the smartest decision I ever made.”
