Netting the job
When New Zealand played host to the one of the world's biggest basketball events, Lauren Watson was behind the scenes ensuring the FIBA U19 World Championship went off without a hitch. The Bachelor of Sport and Recreation graduate majored in Management and had a clear picture of the career she wanted by the time she left AUT.
"The core papers of the Bachelor of Sport and Recreation degree gave me a detailed understanding of the overall sports industry. From my cooperative experience at Tennis Auckland I learnt more about the professional world of sport in six months than I had in my whole life. It was an amazing eye opener and got me really excited about the industry I was in. At the end of my time with Tennis Auckland, I was offered four different jobs from contacts I had made during my AUT placement including the FIBA events role."
Now Lauren spends her time coordinating marketing opportunities, dealing with team relational issues, helping with sponsorship and endorsement deals and planning media launches, opening and closing ceremonies and venue infrastructure.
"It's hard work and commands numerous hours of overtime, but I am loving it and there is nothing else I would rather be doing. I plan to continue with managing sports events, hopefully moving from event to event until I can one day be an event director."
