Adam Tafau
Bachelor of Dance
Being the only male in the dance class was daunting, says Adam Tafau, but that quickly changed.
"I was the only male and in a new city. But the lecturers were supportive and the girls weren’t scary, so I got over it and started making friends."
Adam initially looked at Sport and Recreation, but after doing some papers from both degrees, he decided on dance.
"I discovered I loved dance and wanted to make it my living, and I didn’t care about other people’s perceptions."
He found the degree's balance of practical technique and theory useful. "I learnt about the dance industry in the New Zealand and international contexts."
Adam says he may teach dance one day, but for now, he is focused on performing while young and the body is able.
"I encourage more males to consider dance, especially at AUT with its theoretical as well as practical components."
