Workplace Experience

At AUT Sport and Recreation we believe industry experience is vital. We want to provide you with a transition between your studies and the working world, giving you a head start in the competitive business of sport and recreation. Our students and employers rave about the benefits of our workplace learning programmes, and the success of our graduates speaks for itself.

AUT Sport and Recreation work placements are undertaken in both the second and third years of the degree.

Second year placements are aimed at exposing you to different types of organisations and prepare you for the third year co-operative education placement. You gain valuable experience while having support from your lecturers.

In the final year you will spend 350hrs (or two to three days per week) working with an organisation on a project that is related to your major.

This provides an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between your studies, business practice and your own skills. It also gives you a great start in the industry while still being able to get feedback from AUT lecturers.

Jamie Tukerangi
"The experience of cooperative education was the most valuable part of my degree, and has been the most useful in kick-starting my career. I had a blast with my placement and enjoyed every experience (even the bad ones I can laugh about now!) I learnt a whole lot that I couldn’t learn on campus."

Employers think it’s a winning formula

“Harbour Sport has been fortunate to have AUT students undertake part of their placements with us over several years. All of the students have shown great confidence in dealing with a wide variety of tasks and people from the community. They have shown an ability to complete a broad range of tasks efficiently with good initiative and understanding of our industry in a relatively short period of time in which they have been here.

The students have all quickly earned the respect of all the staff at Harbour Sport by their excellent work ethic and their willingness to help others in our busy team environment. We can gladly say that they have made a valuable contribution to our organization.”
