Robert has a background in sociology and criminology.  He graduated with a PhD from the University of Auckland with a thesis exploring criminological theorising, justice policies and Māori. His academic roles include Programme Leader for the undergraduate programmes in criminology, conflict resolution and social sciences at AUT. His research interests have focused on Māori social issues, indigenous criminology, and criminal justice policies. Recent research has examined Māori and bio-identity.

Robert is a Co-Editor of the New Zealand Sociology Journal, and is on the Editorial Board of the MAI Journal.
