Biography:

Evan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Sciences. He has a background in political science and sociology. Prior to his arrival at AUT, Evan taught courses in ethnic relations and the sociology of music at the University of Canterbury. He also has public policy experience having worked as a policy analyst at the Ministry of Education in Wellington.

Evan's research lies primarily at the intersection of political science and sociology, in an area sometimes referred to as political sociology. His published work focuses on the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process; social, economic and political inequalities; public policy in relation to Maori; and contemporary Maori protest politics and the struggle for tino rangatiratanga. In addition, he is actively engaged in research around the broader processes of racism and ethnicity, anti-racist movements, identity politics, and research and indigenous peoples.

Evan's doctoral thesis provided an analysis of contemporary Maori protest politics and the struggle for tino rangatiratanga in the years from 1968 to 1995.

Evan has been involved in supervision of research at the doctoral and MA thesis levels on a range of topics. He welcomes discussion with intending research students, especially in the fields of ethnic politics and social inequalities.
