Biotechnology Research Institute Biofilm Research Unit
Everywhere we look, we find biofilms growing – in our mouths, in our intestines, in streams, on food processing equipment and in our factories – forming complex communities in which the individual cells communicate via chemical signals. Biofilms are quite different from free-floating cells and are often much more resistant to cleaning and sanitizing. It is therefore essential that we study biofilms to ensure that we can control them.

Medical laboratory science and molecular genetics laboratories Molecular Genetics Research Unit
The Molecular Genetics Research Unit was established in 2009. Its purpose is to provide support to staff and students within the Faculty of Health & Environmental Sciences who wish to apply molecular genetics tools to their research question. Research being carried out in the Unit covers diverse topics such as genome evolution, gene expression and molecular communication.
