Triston YounkinThe right chemistry

Before drug treatments make it to hospital shelves and doctors’ surgeries they undergo rigorous manufacturing trials with drug development companies. AUT graduate Triston Insley-Younkin is managing the clinical manufacturing phase as a senior research associate with Elan Pharmaceuticals in San Francisco, California.
Choosing the Applied Chemistry (Major) and Microbiology (Minor) under AUT’s Bachelor of Applied Sciences programme has given Triston the career diversity he was looking for.
“A chemistry degree allows me to work in many different scientific fields such as; biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, environmental, petrochemical and others.”
The real world experience of lecturers on the programme and the facilities he had access to at AUT have also given Triston an edge.
“Having lecturers and professors who had worked extensively in industry was vital, they were able to give us real insights into how techniques, instruments, processes, and ideas were applied to the real world. The applied chemistry degree gave me a good basic understanding of many scientific areas, which enabled me to get a part-time job while studying, at a pharmaceutical manufacturing company. The hands on experience with analytical instruments during my degree, helped a lot when it came to working in the lab.”
