Sheree BoydBachelor of Applied Science - Environmental Studies

Being hearing impaired did not stop Sheree Boyd from completing a Bachelor of Applied Science degree at AUT and now, she is taking part in ground-breaking research as part of her postgraduate studies.

Sheree majored in environmental studies in her undergraduate degree, and went straight on to start a Master of Applied Science.

Her supervisor chose Sheree to be involved in the multinational research project after being impressed by Sheree's work in her Bachelors degree and her perseverance through the programme.

As part of the project, Sheree is examining slabs of sediment from the ocean floor for life.

"I had these samples x-rayed and from these x-rays, I can see evidence of clams, worm burrows, even traces of organisms that lived there centuries ago."

Her interest in science began when she was doing secretarial work for a geology company and home-schooling her first two children for eight years.

"I found the science interesting, and as our eldest daughter became interested in geology, so did I. I am fascinated by what's out there in the deep sea."
