Jaimi FludeBachelor of Applied Science - Health Protection

Jaimi Flude was in demand before she had even left university. Jaimi is an environmental health officer for the Auckland City Council, but started working there part-time in the last year of her degree. “I found it good working in my career area while studying, because I could put the theory into practice, and learn the theory behind what I was doing at work."
In her role, Jaimi carries out health inspections at food outlets, tattoo parlours, mortuaries, and hair dressers, and checks out potential hazards such as sceptic tanks. "I love the variety. Our team is split into geographical areas and you are responsible for everything in your area."
Jaimi originally did a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Studies and cross-credited papers for another two years study in Health Protection.
"I enjoyed the initial health protection papers and knew there was a shortage of health protection and environmental health officers in New Zealand. The two majors link well together because in my job I also look at air and water quality."
"It was an easy decision to stay at AUT because I enjoyed the practical focus and the lecturers make you feel important and want to help."
