Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science
Fia Saumamao says he was well-prepared for his new career's diverse demands thanks to studying at AUT.
Fia works in a multi-disciplinary laboratory at Masterton Hospital, Wairarapa where staff are rotated around various roles. While he specialised in immunology and blood transfusion science during his Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science, the broad nature of the degree has been beneficial.
"I am using what I learnt at AUT every day, nothing is wasted. The wide range of skills covered has prepared me for almost everything.
"When I started at AUT, I had only been in New Zealand for two years after moving from Samoa so my English was limited and I found it hard work. But I enjoy a challenge and continuing on to the degree was a good decision.
"The staff were very helpful, always encouraging you to work hard, and always had time to help you. Plus the small classes and friendly classmates helped."
"The degree opened up lots of employment opportunities and I found it easy to get a job. I will be able to work around the world with this qualification."
