Emma Beatson’s postgraduate study was the next step she needed to becoming a leader in marine mammal diet research.
“I studied the diet of pygmy sperm whales which had been stranded in New Zealand waters. This has never been looked at so I have been able to contribute important information on a poorly-understood species.”
“An animal’s diet tells us what they’re eating, where they’re living and how they link in with the rest of the ocean’s food chain.”
Emma enjoyed her undergraduate study at AUT with some inspiring supervisors, making it was an easy decision to stay on.
“I chose AUT because you get out of the classroom and into the field. No matter what science programme you choose, you’ll be exposed to lots of practical work."
“AUT has the gear to basically do any sort of research you want. A highlight for me was the people I worked with and how our research tied in together.”
Emma now works as a marine research officer at AUT, continuing her whale diet research and helping out postgraduate students.
“If I wasn’t working here, because my research was conservation-orientated, it would be easy to get a job with an organisation looking after New Zealand’s special species.”
