Aquaculture research reaps good harvest
Exciting developments, and a growing reputation, in aquaculture research, inspired science graduate Annapoorna Maitrayee Ganesan to travel across the world to undertake her doctoral studies at AUT. Annapoorna has joined a team engaged in on-going research into the New Zealand green-lipped mussel and is investigating the effect of bacterial biofilms on larval attachment and early nutrition amongst seaweeds. Her findings are likely to have positive economic repercussions. She has identified specific bacteria that induce mussels to attach to surfaces, such as mussel farm growing ropes, so that they can be kept within mussel farms until they are ready to be harvested. Annapoorna was awarded a Vice-Chancellor’s doctoral scholarship in 2009 in recognition of the early success of her research.
