Studying science at AUT gives you access to a range of facilities depending on your programme of study. This page list facilities and haslinks to other relevant pages about student life at AUT.

AUT Sciences student have access to quality equipment and technology both on and off campus, enabling you to conduct experiments and research in an environment custom built for sciences. These include:  

Chemistry laboratories Chemistry laboratories
Our laboratories feature instruments for specific and highly sensitive analysis using gas chromatographs and mass-spectrometers, inductively coupled plasma spectrometers and atomic absorption spectrophotometers.
   
Industry standard analysis technology Industry standard analysis technology
Our analysis machinery rivals that found in large industry laboratories. Technology such as the Laser Scattering particle size analyser enables students to analyse chemicals such as arsenic in food, cosmetics etc. in gas or liquid form.
   
Biology and food science laboratories Biology and food science laboratories
Each student has access to a high quality Olympus CX microscope. Advanced classes use these and fluorescence microscopes. Our advanced microbiology classes use the Braun fermentation system.
 
Our food lab includes the latest equipment for measuring texture, colour, protein, fats etc in foods and moisture and water activity analysis.
   
Environmental and marine students Environmental and marine students
Students develop their data collection skills out in the field and have access to equipment to conduct marine, freshwater and terrestrial research throughout the greater Auckland region. This includes vehicles, boats, saltwater trailers, sampling equipment and aquaculture laboratories.
   
Medical laboratory science and molecular genetics laboratories Medical laboratory science and molecular genetics laboratories
DNA analysis is conducted in PC2 (Physical Containment 2) facilities using technologies such as gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid hybridisation, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using PCR thermal analysers. Advanced classes use fluorescence microscopy and microplate readers. Molecular genetics and biofilm research at postgraduate level is carried out in a PC2 lab equipped with a Realplex realtime PCR machine and an impedance-based microbiological analyser.
