Translation
In an increasingly multicultural world, translators are becoming more and more important. There is a growing demand for text from books, websites and a range of new media to be translated, creating many opportunities for people who already speak and write in two languages. This major is ideal for competent writers of two languages who have an interest in acquiring the specific skills of the art of translation.
ENTRY CRITERIA
The applicant for whom English is an additional language must provide evidence of oral and written proficiency in English equivalent to IELTS level 7 or higher. An applicant whose first language is English must normally have studied their language other than English (LOTE) at tertiary level and successfully completed an AUT language proficiency assessment demonstrating proficiency within public, political and educational domains. An interview is required.
WHAT THIS PROGRAMME COVERS
The Translation major will encourage and require students to:
- Recognise the purpose of different types of texts
- Write appropriately within a range of styles
- Produce translations in the Target Language that are correct in terms of content, style and intended purpose
- Critically analyse texts noting their cultural and social frameworks and identify adjustments necessary for transference from the Source Language into the Target Language
- Reflect on and develop strategies to achieve accuracy in both written languages
- Understand and practise ethics of being a translator

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The legal and health sectors offer the majority of translation work.
Legal translation opportunities may include work in areas such as the Department of Justice, Tenancy Services, the Customs Department, the Disputes Tribunal, the Child, Youth and Family Service, or the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and also for private legal firms and immigration agencies.
Health translation opportunities may include work in areas such as documentation by, and for, outpatients’ clinics, mental health settings and counselling.
